esidents of Paddington, a small English village, staged a symbolic vote for secession from the United Kingdom as a unique form of protest against a government plan to house roughly 1,200 asylum seekers at a nearby military base.
In the non-binding referendum held within the village of approximately 350 residents, 285 individuals voted in favor of secession, while 26 voted against it. Following the outcome, Tim McNally, chairman of the village parish council, stated that the vote sent a clear message to the region, the country, and the world, announcing that the settlement will now be symbolically known as the “Principality of Paddington.”
This symbolic referendum was organized in opposition to the government’s proposal to convert the former Ministry of Defence Bicester base, located about 0.8 kilometers from the village, into a housing facility for male asylum seekers. Meanwhile, the British government has stated that the proposed residential center is planned to be largely self-sufficient to minimize any impact on the local population. While the referendum carries no legal weight to break away from the UK, local residents utilized it to voice severe concerns and protest against state policy.
