Members of the Pakistan Under-19 national cricket team were unexpectedly caught in a brief protest outside their hotel in Portsmouth, England, after local demonstrators mistakenly identified the squad as a group of arriving asylum seekers.
The incident occurred outside the Marriott Hotel when approximately 40 individuals gathered following online rumors surrounding the arrival of a coach carrying foreign nationals. Tensions eased quickly after local Reform UK councillor George Madgwick spoke with hotel management and the team’s head coach to confirm their identity as touring professional athletes. Madgwick then addressed the crowd to clear the misunderstanding, leading to the rapid dispersal of the demonstrators.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) subsequently established contact with Pakistan cricket officials to ensure the squad’s well-being and initiate a comprehensive review of security protocols for the remainder of the tour. The Pakistan U-19 team recently concluded a four-day Test against England U-19 in Arundel and bounced back with a 177-run victory in their subsequent Youth One Day International on September 9.
