Several simple household items can effectively restore switches:
- Toothpaste for Light Stains: If switches are not excessively dirty, a small amount of toothpaste applied to a soft cloth or old soft toothbrush can gently clean the exterior surface, followed by wiping away residue with a dry cloth.
- Baking Soda for Stubborn Grime: For old and ingrained stains, a thick paste can be made by mixing a little water with baking soda. Rather than applying it directly, a small amount should be placed on a cloth or brush to clean the surface before instantly wiping away the remaining material with a dry cloth.
- Nail Polish Remover Precautions: While some use nail polish remover for sticky or tough stains, it can damage or discolor certain types of plastics. It should always be tested first on a small, inconspicuous area and never allowed to seep inside the switch.
Furthermore, if a switch is emitting sparks, shows burn marks, feels loose, or becomes unusually warm, attempting to clean it should be avoided in favor of having it inspected by a professional electrician for safety.
