A recent medical study examining adverse event reports and health data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has highlighted a rare association between GLP-1 receptor agonist medications—widely used for weight loss and diabetes management—and a severe neurological condition.
The research reviewed FDA adverse effect databases spanning 2023 to 2024, identifying 15 documented cases of Wernicke’s Encephalopathy among individuals taking GLP-1 drugs. Wernicke’s encephalopathy is a critical brain and nervous system disorder triggered by a severe deficiency of vitamin B1 (thiamine). It can be life-threatening and may lead to permanent memory impairment or an inability to form new memories.
However, medical experts have emphasized that the condition is extremely uncommon. Dr. Kartik Acharya, a physician from Chicago who was not involved in the study, noted that out of the millions of people utilizing GLP-1 medications globally, discovering only 15 cases demonstrates that the risk is exceptionally rare.
