Popular weight-loss and diabetes medications like Ozempic and Wegovy may offer therapeutic benefits beyond weight management by helping reduce cravings for alcohol and other addictive substances, according to recent scientific research.
Belonging to a class of medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, these drugs were originally developed for type 2 diabetes. They mimic the natural GLP-1 hormone to stimulate insulin secretion, slow digestion, and prolong feelings of fullness.
As scientists investigate the broader neurological effects of these treatments, research indicates that GLP-1 medications directly influence the brain’s reward system. Clinical observations and preclinical animal studies show that GLP-1 receptor agonists can significantly curb the drive to consume alcohol, as well as reduce cravings associated with nicotine, opioids, cocaine, and amphetamines. By moderating the brain’s hyperactive reward pathways—which drive both overeating and substance dependency—these treatments present a promising new avenue for addiction management.
