Public consumers in Pakistan continue to face historic fuel prices as official records reveal the current Shehbaz Sharif administration collected a record PKR 3,137 billion (3.137 trillion) through petroleum levies over its two-and-a-half-year tenure.
According to a private television report citing government documentation, petrol prices increased by PKR 178.66 per liter while High-Speed Diesel (HSD) surged by PKR 233 per liter during this period. For the 2025-26 fiscal year, the federal government collected PKR 1,567 billion in petroleum levies alongside an additional PKR 50 billion raised via a carbon levy on petrol and diesel.
In the 2024-25 fiscal year, levy collections totaled PKR 1,220 billion, following PKR 299.63 billion collected during the April–June 2024 quarter. Consumers currently pay a petroleum levy of PKR 80 per liter on both petrol and diesel, in addition to a separate Climate Support Levy of PKR 5 per liter.
