The Sindh High Court (SHC) has acquitted a man previously sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape case, granting him the benefit of the doubt and overturning a lower court’s conviction.
The high court accepted the review appeal filed by the convict, identified as Anwar, and set aside the judgment issued on July 25, 2025, by a trial court in Sujawal. The appellant had been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment alongside a fine of Rs 200,000 for allegedly assaulting the 19-year-old niece of a local resident, Abdul Razzaq.
In its detailed judgment, the SHC noted critical procedural anomalies in the prosecution’s case. The court pointed out a significant delay in the registration of the First Information Report (FIR) and highlighted that the victim’s official medical examination was conducted six months after the alleged incident, rendering the evidence insufficient to maintain the conviction beyond reasonable doubt.
