Instant messaging application WhatsApp has started testing a new offline voice-to-text feature for beta users. The feature allows users to convert their voice into written messages without requiring an internet connection.
According to reports, this tool is designed to provide convenience in situations where users cannot or prefer not to send voice messages. Instead of sending an audio file, the user simply dictates their message, and WhatsApp transcribes it. However, it is important to note that an internet connection is still necessary to send the converted text message to the recipient.
For offline transcription, WhatsApp utilizes downloadable language packs. Users need to download their preferred language package during an initial setup. Once downloaded, the speech-to-text conversion happens directly on the device.
Beta testers have received this feature in WhatsApp Beta version 2.26.37.8. The feature is currently in the trial phase, with the company assessing its performance and stability before a potential wider release.
