Indian cricket team Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar has decided not to apply for an extension after the completion of his current contract term. The former Indian all-rounder informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his decision this week.
According to Cricinfo, Agarkar had also reached out to the BCCI in recent months to inquire whether the board wanted him to continue serving as chief selector until the 2027 World Cup. On Friday, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stated in Mumbai after the Annual General Meeting that the board still has some time to decide regarding Agarkar’s future. Saikia noted, “We still have 15 days left, and 15 days is a long time in the cricket world. We will make a decision at the appropriate time.”
Ajit Agarkar assumed the role of chief selector in July 2023. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in India’s on-field successes and worked alongside the BCCI and team management to plan for future player development and succession.
Under his leadership, India won two Asia Cups (2023 and 2025), reached the 2023 World Cup final, won two T20 World Cups (2024 and 2026), and secured the 2025 Champions Trophy.
