England star batter Joe Root has achieved another major milestone in his illustrious career, surpassing legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar during the first ODI against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street.
During the match, Root crossed the 23,000-run mark in international cricket, making him the eighth player globally and the very first English batsman to accomplish this feat. Root reached the landmark in his 521st international innings, edging past Tendulkar, who achieved the milestone in 522 innings. India’s Virat Kohli currently holds the record as the fastest to reach 23,000 international runs, doing so in 490 innings.
During the fixture, Root contributed 44 runs from 52 deliveries, featuring five boundaries, before being dismissed. This latest achievement adds to a growing list of records where Root has challenged or overtaken benchmarks previously held by Tendulkar, including recently surpassing the Indian maestro’s tally for Test half-centuries.
