NATO fighter jets successfully intercepted and destroyed an unmanned aerial vehicle after it breached Lithuania’s airspace, prompting praise from top regional officials who highlighted collective defense readiness amid ongoing regional security tensions.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda confirmed the interception on social media, stating that such decisive preparedness is essential for the region given Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine. According to preliminary data from the National Crisis Management Center cited by Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT), the drone originated from neighboring Belarus and entered airspace near the village of Pratkūnai in southern Lithuania while heading westward toward the country’s second-largest city, Kaunas.
Prior to the interception, local authorities issued a drone alert across the capital city of Vilnius and surrounding districts. Highlighting the swift allied response, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister emphasized that the operation demonstrates NATO’s collective vigilance and unwavering resolve in protecting allied skies.
