ollowing continuous increases in petroleum product prices, electricity is expected to become more expensive for consumers across the country. A formal request has been submitted to increase electricity prices under the monthly fuel adjustment for August.
If this request is approved, electricity prices could increase by PKR 1.73 per unit. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will hold a hearing on this petition filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) on September 29.
This proposed increase is also expected to affect consumers of K-Electric. According to the CPPA, DISCOs were supplied 14 billion 464 million units of electricity in August, with the generation cost averaging PKR 8.82 per unit.
During August, 37.84% of electricity was generated from hydropower. Local coal contributed 10.88%, while imported coal accounted for 15.59%. Data shows that furnace oil contributed 2.15% to power generation, local gas accounted for 7.04%, and imported LNG made up 8.48%. The generation cost from furnace oil stood at PKR 45.25 per unit, whereas imported LNG cost PKR 45.92 per unit.
