.Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, where they discussed regional and global peace alongside other key matters.
Reiterating Pakistan’s firm commitment to the multilateral system, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the UN’s central role in promoting global peace and development, while reaffirming adherence to the principles of the UN Charter. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Guterres’s leadership and principled role in upholding the UN Charter. The two leaders addressed critical regional and global concerns, including the situation in the Middle East, with the Prime Minister emphasizing dialogue and diplomacy to resolve regional tensions and reiterating Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and an independent state.
Furthermore, Shehbaz Sharif briefed the Secretary-General on the rising trend of Islamophobia, particularly in a neighboring region, urging effective global countermeasures. The discussion also covered Afghanistan, with both leaders expressing concern over the alarming increase in terrorism originating from Afghan soil. Secretary-General António Guterres commended Pakistan’s leadership role and effective voice at the UN, praising its contributions to global peace, security, peaceful resolution of conflicts, counter-terrorism efforts, and the sacrifices made in the fight against terrorism.
