Princess Diana’s legendary “Revenge Dress”—one of the most famous fashion statements of the 20th century—is set to be auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York on December 9, 2026, where it is expected to fetch between $150,000 and $300,000.
Designed by Greek fashion designer Christina Stambolian, the off-the-shoulder black silk cocktail gown gained worldwide fame on June 29, 1994, when Diana wore it to a Vanity Fair event at the Serpentine Gallery in London. The appearance coincided with the broadcast of a televised interview in which her husband, Prince Charles, publicly acknowledged his infidelity. Although Diana had possessed the dress for nearly three years, she originally considered it too bold for royal protocol; however, her last-minute decision to wear it transformed the garment into an enduring cultural symbol of independence and confidence.
The gown was previously sold at a charity auction in 1997 alongside 78 other dresses to raise funds for cancer and AIDS causes. Before going under the hammer in New York, the historic piece will go on public display across an international exhibition tour in London, Hong Kong, and Geneva.
