Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply following US President Donald Trump’s refusal to extend a 60-day memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tehran, which officially expired on Monday.
Speaking on the expiring agreement, President Trump urged Iran to lay down its arms and end hostilities, claiming that American representatives were actively holding talks with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, the IRGC swiftly issued a denial regarding any direct negotiations with US officials.
In response, Iranian authorities signaled a shift toward a more aggressive diplomatic and defense posture. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that the 60-day window for negotiations had become meaningless due to alleged US violations of the understanding. Baghaei emphasized that Tehran would not alter its foreign policy under external pressure or threats and declared Iran fully prepared to counter any potential military aggression. The standoff coincides with heightening security concerns along the Strait of Hormuz, where US assertions of maritime control have amplified regional anxieties.
