Thousands Gather in Pretoria for Massive Heritage Day Braai Attempt to Break Global Barbecue Record.

Thousands of South Africans flocked to the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in the capital city of Pretoria to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous barbecue (braai).

Organized to coincide with the national Heritage Day celebrations, the high-energy event featured approximately 500 grill stations where participants cooked up staple favorites like boerewors sausages, burgers, and steaks. Organizers had targeted an attendance of around 3,000 people to comfortably surpass the previous benchmark set in Ishigaki, Japan, in 2023, where 2,220 individuals grilled simultaneously.

While thousands turned out in a vibrant display of the nation’s multicultural culinary tradition, final certifications faced technical hurdles regarding adherence to continuous station occupancy rules during the review process.
