Italian financial police at Caselle Airport in Turin seized the dried head of an endangered crocodile concealed inside the luggage of a passenger traveling from Miami via Istanbul.
According to the Guardia di Finanza, the specimen was tightly wrapped in brown packing paper in an effort to bypass security checks and customs oversight. Border officials intercepted the item during targeted inspections aimed at curbing the illegal international trade in protected wildlife under the 1973 Washington Convention (CITES).
An official investigation has been launched against the passenger for illegal wildlife trafficking without the required import permits. If convicted, the individual faces potential fines ranging from €20,000 to €200,000 or a prison sentence of six months to one year. Italian authorities noted that the country continues to serve as a major transit node for exotic animal contraband, often brought in illegally by travelers claiming to purchase them as souvenirs
