Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has denounced the tightening US economic measures against Tehran as “economic terrorism,” asserting that Washington is escalating aggressive actions abroad to distract from its own internal economic challenges.
Responding to recent policy declarations by US President Donald Trump, Araghchi stated via social media platform X that maximum economic pressure damages global trade, national sovereignty, and energy markets. Citing a recent report regarding the surging US national debt—approaching $40 trillion—the Iranian envoy argued that Washington’s economic policy against Tehran represents an “economic declaration of war” that has repeatedly failed in the past.
The statements follow warnings from President Trump that countries continuing financial, commercial, or logistical cooperation with Iran will face severe economic repercussions. Analysts view the strategy as an attempt to further isolate Iran from the global financial system, while Tehran maintains that such unilateral sanctions disrupt international supply chains and energy stability.
