Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims to have intercepted two oil tankers in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, alleging the vessels used an “unannounced route” supported by U.S. aerial surveillance rather than approved maritime corridors.
According to a statement released by the IRGC, the action resulted in the two commercial tankers being halted, while four other nearby oil tankers immediately diverted their course to avoid entering the contested area.
Iranian military officials asserted that the operation was conducted to enforce national maritime regulations in the choke point. However, the official statement provided no details regarding the vessel names, flag registries, crew members, or potential casualties.
As of now, neither U.S. defense officials nor international shipping operators have independently confirmed or denied the IRGC’s claims.
Defense and shipping analysts highlight that ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz—a vital sea lane through which a major portion of global petroleum flows—continue to raise widespread concerns regarding global energy market stability and commercial maritime trade routes.
