Search and rescue operations in Northern Pakistan have been temporarily suspended until Saturday morning following a deadly avalanche on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th highest summit (8,047 meters).
According to Gilgit-Baltistan government officials, rescue teams recovered four bodies on Friday. However, search efforts remain ongoing for six missing mountaineers, including high-profile Nepali climber Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja.
Incident Details & Impact Zone
The tragedy struck between Camp 2 and Camp 3 on the Karakoram mountain range. Communication with the climbing team was completely severed immediately after the avalanche occurred.
Victims Identified
Tourism officials confirmed that three of the recovered individuals have been identified and transported to CMH Skardu:
- Sarah Mallory Geise: Female mountaineer from the United States.
- Nazeera Ahmed Al-Harthy: Female mountaineer from Oman.
- Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta): Renowned Nepali Sherpa climber.
Officials from the Alpine Club of Pakistan noted that tracking devices belonging to several missing team members are active between the altitudes of 6,000 and 7,000 meters. High-altitude rescue teams will resume search operations at first light on Saturday morning.
